Acne and Sulfur

SulfurSo, the act of ancient Romans in which they bathed themselves in hot Sulfur springs to treat their severe ailments and skin disorders including acne was not at all false. Referred as brimstone by Bible, Sulfur actually was the earliest treatment for acne known to man and besides acne sulfur was also used for treating skin disorders such as dermatitis and bacterial or fungal infections.

Sulfur in combination with several other drugs such as salicylic acid, resorcinol and sodium sulfacetamide has been used as acne treatment for over fifty years now. Almost every prescription medication and over the counter skin care products such as creams, lotions, mask and soap have sulfur.

Sulfur basically is a naturally occurring element and due to its slow oxidation in air it smells like rotten eggs or untreated sewage. This is the reason why sulfur isn’t used as a standalone acne product, and is always used in combination with other pleasant smelling ingredients.
